Information about Academic Support

Academic support centers response to COVID-19 for Spring Term 2020

As classes have been moved online, so has our academic support. Students will have the opportunity to still work with peer tutors, academic progress monitors, supplemental instruction leaders, and professional staff virtually for the remainder of the semester.

The University has three academic support centers for undergraduate students: The Academic Success Center, the Math Center, and the Writing Center. Each center is committed to assisting students to reach their academic goals and potential by providing out of class learning support. Rest assured that the University’s academic support centers are still committed to providing continued services to students as courses transition to an online environment.

In General

1. Tutoring and other academic support services will continue, but virtually. They will take place via GoBoard, Zoom, or Fuze, which are video conferencing platforms.
2. Students who do not have access to a computer with audio/video capabilities will still be able to take advantage of the academic support offered.  All three platforms have text chat features and do not require users to have audio/video capabilities to join the tutoring sessions.
3. Students who were already working with a tutor prior to spring break will receive an email asking if you would like to continue to meet with a tutor for the remainder of the semester.
4. Academic support services are available to anyone, whether you took advantage of them while you were on campus or if you would like to start now.
5. All tutoring sessions will be one-on-one for the reminder of the semester. If you utilized drop-in tutoring or were referred to drop-in tutoring, we encourage you to request a peer tutor if you would like to continue to receive academic support in any of your courses.
6. While our physical offices are closed, the academic support centers are still open remotely. Please do not hesitate to call, email, or video chat with any of us regarding questions, concerns, or to develop a plan for how to be successful online. The contact information from all three support service centers can be found at the bottom of this message.

The Academic Success Center

1. The Academic Success Center plans to continue to offer virtual one-on-one peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic progress monitoring, as well as professional support from the members of the Academic Success Center.
2. Peer Tutors and Academic Progress Monitors will utilize a video conference platform called GoBoard, which is designed specifically for remote academic support.
3. Students who previously did not have a peer tutor but would now like a tutor can request to be matched by filling out the Peer Tutor Request form online.
4. Supplemental Instruction will also continue for the semester. Supplemental Instruction leaders will be using our University’s video conference platform called Fuze, which allows a group of users to join a session at the same time. These Supplemental Instruction leaders will be sharing updates about these sessions in your Kodiak classrooms if SI was offered during the first half of the semester.
5. The Academic Success Center will still be reaching out to students via calls and texts, so please make sure you have updated your contact information in Self Service.

The Math Center

1. The Math Center will still provide academic support to students in their mathematics courses. Math tutors will utilize a video conference platform called GoBoard which is designed specifically for remote academic support.
2. For the remainder of the spring 2020 semester, all tutoring appointments are online by appointment only. To request a math tutor, please complete the Individual Appointment Request form.

The Writing Center

1. The Writing Center will still provide academic support to students. Writing Center tutors will conduct online writing support via Zoom, a video conference platform.
2. For the remainder of the spring 2020 semester, all tutoring appointments will be conducted online by appointment only at WNEWritingCenter@gmail.com.

Student Code of Conduct for Online Support

As we move to an online and remote model for both classes and academic support, we want to make sure we are creating an environment that makes every user feel supported and comfortable. The academic support centers collaborated to create a Student Code of Conduct for Online Support to ensure those who take advantage of our support services follow appropriate conduct.
