Upon graduation from law school, Professor Leavens clerked for Federal District Court Judge John F. Dooling Jr. in the Eastern District of New York. He then was associated with the New York law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. In 1979, he became a Staff Attorney for the Public Defender Service of the District of Columbia, doing both trial and appellate work. While at the Law School, Professor Leavens took a leave and served for a time as a Special Assistant District Attorney for Hampden County, prosecuting felony cases. His areas of interest include criminal law and procedure, evidence, state constitutionalism, and trial advocacy. For a number of years he served on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s Standing Advisory Committee on the Rules of Criminal Procedure, and has served as its Reporter. Professor Leavens retired from the faculty in 2015.
