Background

Professor Battema has been teaching at Western New England University since 2002. Prior to that, he spent seven years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison working on his doctorate and two years at the University of Pennsylvania working on his master’s degree. He has also worked in the Media Relations office of the Milwaukee Brewers and as the Sports Information Director at Amherst College. He regularly teaches Introduction to Public Speaking; Race, Gender, and Ethnicity in Media; and Media Industries, Government, and Society. His primary research interests include sports and media and representation in media; he has also published work on media industry history. He is a member of the National Communication Association and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
