The Center for International Sport Business (CISB) will host Hugh Dugan, a retired foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State and founder of the Truce Foundation of the United States, on March 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Sleith Hall’s Wood Auditorium. The event, which is free and open to the public, was made possible from a grant from the Alumni Association.
Dugan will talk about his diplomatic career spanning 32 years, including serving as senior adviser to 11 U.S ambassadors to the United Nations, and his work to secure adoption of the Olympic Truce by the UN General Assembly in years of the Olympic Games. The truce, a tradition originating from Ancient Greece, ensures the Olympic host is not attacked and athletes and spectators can travel safely to the Games and return peacefully to their countries. The talk, entitled “Sport and Diplomacy,” is part of CISB’s “For the Love of the Games” speaker series.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dugan served on and coordinated numerous U.S. delegations to the UN General Assembly, and was lead negotiator for many U.S. delegations to conferences in Geneva and New York. Posted to the U.S. Permanent Mission to the UN, Dugan was a principal architect in crafting election strategies that secured seats for the United States on UN specialized agencies.
Currently, Dugan is a visiting scholar and professor at the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, where he teaches courses on the Politics of UN Reform and UN Security Council issues.
As founder and president of the Truce Foundation of the United States, Dugan created a global awards program that has recognized leading personalities in the world of sport and diplomacy, including heads of state, heads of government, and other influential leaders and policy makers at a gala event held in conjunction with the Olympic Games and Olympic Winter Games.
Dugan obtained his bachelor’s degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, and earned graduate degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University (MA) and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania (MBA).
