In September of 2018, School of Law Dean Sudha Setty circulated the following recent achievements of Law faculty and staff.
- Professor Harris Freeman and Pro Bono Coordinator Sam Charron have been working with WNE Law students and alumni on the Immigrant Protection Project of Western Massachusetts. The IPP’s important work has been highlighted in the Hampshire Daily Gazette and other media outlets.
- In May, Professor Erin Buzuvis presented about the inclusion of transgender athletes at a conference at Harvard University entitled Participation, Inclusion and Social Responsibility in Global Sports, on the subject of gender, race, and inequality in the sport of football/soccer.
- In June, Professor Buzuvis presented about Title IX at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum as part of an annual program it puts on for local educators. While she was there, she got to tour the museum's current exhibit about sport and social justice. Artifacts included Billie Jean King's dress from the Battle of the Sexes and telegrams from Jackie Robinson to various presidents.
- On July 7, the Berkshire Eagle ran an article on recreational marijuana sales in Massachusetts, in which they quoted Professor Tina Cafaro and referenced her scholarly work on driving while under the influence.
- On July 13, Professor Matthew Charity spoke with WGBY about the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.
- In July, Professor Buzuvis presented on LGBT legal issues in sport at Oregon Law School’s Summer Sport Institute. The institute boasts the dream team of sports law faculty from around the country, which naturally included Professor Buzuvis!
- In July, Dean Sudha Setty was elected to membership in the American Law Institute, the nation’s leading law reform organization that brings us things like the Restatement of Contracts and the Model Penal Code. She is working with the consultative group on data privacy.
- Professor and Dean Emeritus Eric Gouvin continues his streak of being in the top 10% of authors for SSRN downloads.
- In August, Professor Tina Cafaro led the University’s first foray into summer offerings for high school students with a two-week day camp, Mission: Ignition, involving forensic analysis and trial skills.
- Every year since 2000, the School of Law has been pleased to host fellows from Siena College to work with faculty members for the summer. Prof. Art Wolf organizes this program with Dr. Len Cutler of Siena College. This summer, our 19th year of the program, our two fellows worked with Professor Julie Steiner.
- For the sixth year in a row, WNE worked with MassMutual to run the Just the Beginning/Summer Legal Institute, a weeklong program for high school students interested in learning about the law. Thanks to Pro Bono Coordinator Sam Charron for his work in organizing the School of Law’s involvement.
