In a remarkable display of tax law expertise, Western New England University (WNE) School of Law students Joy Vincenzo and Brendan Morrison clinched the coveted Best Written Submission prize at the 2023-2024 ABA Tax Challenge Competition held in San Francisco, CA on January 18-20. Their outstanding written solution outperformed those of 64 participating teams in this national competition.
The Law Student Tax Challenge (LSTC) is a rigorous competition focused on the tax consequences of complex business-planning problems. It provides law students with a platform to apply their acquired tax knowledge, showcasing their research, writing, and oratory skills.
"Joy and Brendan's success is a testament to their exceptional understanding of tax law and their ability to apply it in real-world scenarios," said Fred Royal WNE School of Law professor and mentor to the triumphant students.
The Tax Challenge requires two-person teams to solve a complex business problem that might arise in everyday tax practice. The competition comprises two components: evaluation of written work and oral defense of solutions. Vincenzo and Morrison not only excelled in their written submissions but also demonstrated their prowess in oral argumentation.
"I am immensely proud of Joy and Brendan for their outstanding performance in the Tax Challenge Competition," said Royal. "Their dedication and hard work have truly paid off, showcasing the excellence that defines our students at Western New England University."
Dean Zelda Harris of the School of Law extended her congratulations, emphasizing the exceptional nature of this achievement. "The Tax Challenge Competition is renowned for its demanding evaluation of participants' understanding of tax law, making Joy and Brendan's victory a significant milestone in their legal education. Congratulations to you and Professor Royal on your exceptional performance and competition win. It is a true testament to your hard work and professionalism."
In securing the top position for the Best Written Submission, Vincenzo and Morrison have added another chapter to WNE's legacy of success in the Tax Challenge Competition. Under the guidance of Professor Royal, WNE Law School teams have consistently participated in the competition for 18 years, achieving remarkable milestones. Throughout this period, three WNE Law School teams, including the recent triumph, have clinched the coveted first place for the Best Written Submission. Moreover, WNE teams have demonstrated excellence in the Oral Competition, with two victories and two second-place finishes. This continued success underscores WNE Law School's enduring tradition of excellence in the ABA Tax Challenge Competition.
