Molly C. Watson has been named Director of Communications and Public Relations at Western New England University (WNE) effective April 15, 2024. Vice President for Marketing and External Affairs Mercedes Maskalik announced the appointment citing Watson's deep experience in strategic planning, media relations and crisis communications.
Maskalik noted Watson's record of accomplishment and broad communications experience, which span higher education, healthcare, and non-profits. "Molly has a great track record of achievement in communications," said Maskalik. "Her strategic thinking, initiative, and collaborative approach will be invaluable in an ever-changing communications and media landscape. We are thrilled to have her join us at Western New England, bringing a strategic vision and a seasoned perspective that will be vital as we continue to advance our University's mission and strengthen our community."
As the University's chief storyteller and media strategist, Watson will play a critical role in advancing WNE's narrative, promoting its unique identity and mission through innovative communication strategies regionally, nationally, and internationally.
"Higher education provides a unique platform for storytelling and communications due to the diverse experiences, backgrounds and tools now available to students, faculty and staff," said Watson. "I look forward to partnering with WNE communications colleagues to share the stories that promote students and programs and to develop effective new communications channels that will make my team’s work more innovative and supportive to the university."
Watson brings a wide range of communications experience to WNE. She joins the University from Chicago-based Ritz Communications where she has provided strategic counsel to a wide portfolio of clients including Merck, Altera (formerly Allscripts), Merative (formerly IBM Watson Health), the MPN Research Foundation, and the Tug McGraw Foundation.
Locally, she has served in a variety of communications roles supporting Western Massachusetts-based organizations including Westfield State University, Baystate Noble, and the Amelia Park Children’s Museum among others.
