Western New England University (WNE) celebrated a milestone weekend this fall, bringing together more than 1,000 members of the Golden Bear community from near and far for an unforgettable Golden Bear Weekend. This year, WNE combined three signature events—Undergraduate Open House, Family & Friends Weekend, and Homecoming—creating a dynamic experience for prospective students, families, alumni, and current students.
Amidst perfect fall weather, the weekend offered something for everyone. From sporting events to shopping local WNE alumni-owned businesses, and the debut of the Golden Beer Tent, the weekend proved to be a success for WNE spirit.
Golden Bear Boulevard: The Heart of the Celebration
On Saturday, October 19, the campus came alive as each of WNE’s undergraduate colleges showcased their pride along Golden Bear Boulevard, decked out in blue and gold. Tents filled with faculty, staff, and students lined the Pine Grove, along with alumni-owned businesses eager to reconnect. Families flocked to the KidZone for fun activities, while food trucks offered delicious local fare.
For the first time, spectators at the WNE football game enjoyed the action from the Golden Beer Tent, where alumni-owned breweries Fieldcrest and Loophole served up local favorites. This new addition was a crowd-pleaser, adding a fresh dimension to the game-day experience.
Golden Bear Athletics Shine
Golden Bear athletes delivered exceptional performances, igniting pride throughout the weekend. The WNE football team triumphed over Curry College with a commanding 47-21 victory. Women’s volleyball and field hockey teams both secured 3-1 wins against conference rival University of New England. Cross-country teams also impressed, with the men’s team finishing 4th out of 17 and the women’s team placing 9th out of 14.
Celebrating Milestones: Reunions and Anniversaries
Golden Bear Weekend 2024 was also a time for reflection and celebration, as alumni gathered for milestone reunions and special events. The Class of 1994 held its 30th reunion, reconnecting and reminiscing off-campus. WNE Wrestling marked its 50th anniversary with a special celebration that included an intrasquad meet, brunch, and dinner.
Women's Basketball hosted its annual alumni game, a beloved tradition that brings past and current players together, while other athletic alumni events across campus celebrated the enduring bond of the Golden Bear family.
Honoring Athletic Excellence at the Downes Hall of Fame
The weekend began on a high note with the Downes Hall of Fame induction ceremony, recognizing the accomplishments of distinguished WNE athletes. This year’s honorees included Jacquelyn (Bailey) Thornton ’03 (Women’s Soccer), Bryan Brunk ’98 (Men’s Wrestling), Marissa (Bonitatibus) Kukis ’11, and Michael Theulen, former Director of Athletics and Men’s Basketball coach, who were welcomed as the Class of 2024 inductees.
