Western New England University (WNE) Student Ambassadors once again demonstrated their commitment to community engagement. Twenty-five WNE students served as Student Ambassadors for the Spirit of Springfield’s 30th Annual City of Bright Nights Ball on Saturday, November 9, 2024. The event, a signature fundraiser celebrating Springfield’s iconic holiday light display, featured this year’s enchanting theme, “Into the Forest.”

WNE is the only university that provides student support with the Student Ambassadors playing a key role in ensuring the evening's success, assisting with event logistics and greeting guests with the warmth and professionalism emblematic of WNE. Their contributions earned praise from event organizers and attendees alike.

"You were absolutely fantastic,” said Andrea St. James, executive director of career education and the student ambassador coordinator. “Your representation of both Western New England University and the Spirit of Springfield was exemplary. You truly brought grace and professionalism to the event.” The elegantly themed black-tie only gala includes a gourmet dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions and a 50/50 raffle.  Its guests include business, community, military, public safety and political leaders.

For students, the experience was as enriching as it was rewarding. “Being part of such a meaningful event that supports our community is always an honor,” said Brianna Lanci, ‘25 “It’s inspiring to see how much effort goes into making Bright Nights special for everyone.”

The Spirit of Springfield’s City of Bright Nights Ball is the organization’s largest fundraiser, which benefits Bright Nights at Forest Park, a beloved holiday tradition that has brought joy to thousands of visitors for nearly three decades. The dazzling light display, set in Springfield’s historic park, draws visitors from across New England each winter and is a vital part of the city’s cultural fabric.

“We were thrilled to embrace this year’s ‘Into the Forest’ theme,” said two-time ambassador Caylen Hunt, ‘25. “It was a magical experience and a reminder of the importance of giving back.”

WNE’s longstanding partnership with the Spirit of Springfield reflects the university’s dedication to fostering civic responsibility and community engagement among its students. President Robert E. Johnson was the honorary chair of the 2023 event.

The Golden Bear pride was evident throughout the evening, as Student Ambassadors balanced their responsibilities with smiles and heartfelt enthusiasm. Communications Professor Brenda Garton-Sjoberg also served as the evening’s emcee.

“Thank you for all you contributed to the event and everything you do for Western New England—both seen and unseen,” shared Professor Brenda Garton-Sjoberg. “Your presence at the Bright Nights Ball exemplifies the best of what it means to be part of our university.”

As the holiday season approaches, the Student Ambassadors’ efforts stand as a testament to WNE’s mission of community involvement, embodying the university’s values of leadership, service, and connection.
