Law Professor Stacey Lantagne Awarded Prestigious IPIL Intellectual Property Scholarship Grant

WNE is proud to announce that Professor Stacey Lantagne of the School of Law has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Sponsored Scholarship Grant for the Legal Academy from The Honorable Nancy F. Atlas Intellectual Property American Inn of Court (Atlas IP Inn). This competitive grant, administered by the Institute for Intellectual Property & Information Law (IPIL) at the University of Houston Law Center, recognizes Professor Lantagne’s research in intellectual property law, particularly her focus on the intersection of digital creativity, copyright incentives and trademark protections, and human artists.

“I am honored to receive this recognition from the Atlas IP Inn and IPIL,” said Professor Lantagne. “This grant will allow me to further explore the evolving complexities of intellectual property in a digital world, particularly as we grapple with the implications that artificial intelligence and its legal challenges might hold for human creators.”

Professor Lantagne, who joined WNE in 2022, is renowned for her scholarship on fanfiction, internet memes, and other forms of digital creativity. Her work has been featured in prominent publications and media outlets such as WiredNPR, and The Atlantic. In addition to her academic achievements, she serves on the Legal Committee of the Organization for Transformative Works, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving fanworks.

The Atlas IP Inn’s Sponsored Scholarship Grant for law professors seeks to promote quality scholarship in intellectual property and information law, with a focus this year on copyright, trademark, entertainment, media, art, design, and sports law. Professor Lantagne’s forthcoming work, supported by the grant, will examine the legal collision of generative artificial intelligence with copyright law's basic foundational assumptions.
