Western New England University (WNE) mourns the passing of Edwin “Eddy” Lindsay ’78, a beloved member of the Golden Bear community. The University extends its deepest sympathies to the Lindsay family and all who were touched by his remarkable life.
Eddy Lindsay was a dedicated friend, teammate, husband, father, alumnus, former trustee, and an unwavering supporter of Golden Bear Athletics. From his freshman year, Lindsay made a lasting impact on campus and continued to inspire those around him long after his graduation.
As a student-athlete, Lindsay excelled as a leader and dominant sweeper on the men’s soccer team, eventually serving as team captain during his senior year. In 1975, he helped lead the team to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) New England Championship, advancing to the NAIA National Championship, where they finished fourth. The team concluded the season with an impressive 15-4-2 record and was later inducted into the Downes Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. Lindsay received individual induction in 2006 for his outstanding contributions both on and off the field.
Lindsay’s love for WNE was evident throughout his life. Both his brothers, James Lindsay ’81 and William “Billy” Lindsay ’77, attended the University, with Billy playing alongside Eddy for three seasons. He married fellow alumna Paula (Lewandowski) Lindsay ’77, and their son, Kyle Lindsay ’06, carried on the family legacy by attending WNE and playing for the men’s soccer team.
Beyond WNE, Lindsay dedicated himself to fostering athletic and educational opportunities for others. As a founding member of the Cumberland Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) Board and a beloved coach, he inspired countless young athletes. He also coached the North Cumberland Middle School (NCMS) girls' soccer team and the Cumberland High School girls' soccer team, instilling in his players a love for the game and values that extended far beyond the field.
Lindsay’s commitment to service was equally impactful. He served on several boards, including the Board of Directors for TNT Marketing from 1998-2010 and the International Executive Committee for Crossmark from 2010-2012. At WNE, he was a valued member of the Board of Trustees from 2007-2013 and the Executive Athletic Advisory Board from 2012-2015.
Even after retiring in 2012, Lindsay remained a devoted supporter of Golden Bear Athletics. He was often spotted at Suprenant Field on fall Saturdays, cheering on the men’s and women’s soccer teams, surrounded by friends and former teammates.
Lindsay’s legacy of leadership, service, and passion for community will be cherished by all who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his impact will be felt for generations to come.
