Western New England University (WNE) hosted its annual Leadership Donor Reception on September 24, 2025, at GreatHorse Country Club in Hampden, Mass., celebrating the generosity of donors whose philanthropy sustains and strengthens the University’s mission. The evening brought together members of WNE’s Benefactors’, Cupola, President’s, and Loyalty Societies for an event centered on gratitude, connection, and impact.
Interim President Michael Alexander opened the evening by thanking leadership donors for their unwavering support of WNE and its students. “You believe in our mission, you invest in our students, and you help create opportunities that change lives,” he said. “That’s not just philanthropy, it’s leadership.” He encouraged guests to connect with students throughout the night, emphasizing that their stories best illustrate the power of giving.
Vice President for Advancement Dean Hickey welcomed guests and introduced The Golden Voices, who performed a lively rendition of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” a fitting tribute to the University’s loyal supporters. The program also featured remarks from faculty, students, and alumni who exemplify WNE’s mission in action.
A highlight of the program was the presentation of the Community Leadership Award to Professor Hillary Haft Bucs, recognized for more than 20 years of service to the University. Known for her positivity, mentorship, and creativity, Professor Bucs has shaped generations of students as a professor of theater and advisor to the University’s performing arts troupes.
The University also welcomed new members into the Benefactors’ Society, those whose cumulative giving has exceeded $100,000, and the Cupola Society, which honors donors who have made planned gifts to secure WNE’s future. Among those recognized were Elena Gervino ’88JD, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Constance “Connie” Willette PhD ’91MBA, both of whom were honored for their enduring commitment to supporting students through scholarships and advocacy.
The Delbridge Family Spirit of Philanthropy Award was presented by Kevin S. Delbridge ’77 BSBA/’19LH to President Emeritus Anthony S. Caprio, honoring his transformational leadership and extraordinary contributions to WNE. During his nearly 25-year presidency, Dr. Caprio guided the University through unprecedented growth - overseeing the construction of nine new buildings, the establishment of the College of Pharmacy, and two successful capital campaigns that redefined the institution’s trajectory. His ability to inspire generosity and his personal commitment to giving have left a lasting legacy that continues to shape Western New England University today.
The most moving moment of the evening came from student speaker Elizabeth Burnham ’26, a Business Analytics and Information Management major, who spoke with heartfelt gratitude about how donor support has shaped her educational journey. Her reflection served as a powerful reminder of the direct impact philanthropy has on the lives and futures of WNE students.
In closing, Dean Hickey thanked donors for their continued belief in the University’s mission. “Your generosity is what makes everything we do possible,” he said. “Together, we are building a stronger, more vibrant Western New England.”
