Health Leadership Program

Shaping Future Healthcare Innovators

The COPHS Health Leadership Program provides Springfield-area middle school students with insights into the diverse opportunities within the healthcare sector. Instruction incorporates in-person and distance PharmD mentors as part of the Pharmacists as Community Educators elective course. Students explore critical topics and engage in healthcare-related activities, including reading prescriptions and mixing medications, learning the intricacies of handling toxins, and more.

The program includes two intensive sessions held at participating schools, offering a total of 20 hours of exposure to the field of pharmacy and other health-related disciplines. Each five-week program, held during the school day, provides real-world authentic instruction, experiential learning, and valuable networking opportunities.

The semester culminates with a full-day event at the WNE College of Pharmacy. Students explore the Pharmacy Lab, donning masks, hats, and scrubs, and participating in small-group immersive activities including an EMT course and an activity with “Stan the Man,” a programmable mannequin that simulates medical situations.
