Cupola Award

Awarding Golden Bear Excellence

The Cupola Award of Excellence (formerly Skookum) was established in 1989 by the Western New England University Alumni Association with a goal of recognizing student achievement.

Inspired by one of the most recognizable symbols on campus, the Cupola represents the highest point at Western New England University—a fitting reflection of the achievement, impact, and character demonstrated by each recipient.

While the name evolves, the distinction remains unchanged. Now being stewarded in partnership with Student Life, the award continues to recognize students who have made meaningful and lasting contributions to the University and beyond through leadership, service, and academic excellence.

Each fall, approximately 15 exceptional seniors are recognized as Cupola Award recipients at a signature event celebrating their achievements. These students are selected from more than 100 nominees following a rigorous application and interview process that takes place during the spring of their junior year. Of the students who receive the Cupola Award, the three students with the highest scores receive additional recognition as Royal Cupola (2) and Grand Cupola (1).
