While other Western New England University students are leaving for their summer vacations, fifteen students will travel to Qingdao, China for a month to study abroad at Shandong University of Science and Technology, where students will take an accelerated engineering course along with native students.

This is the third year that founding Chair of Civil Engineering Kenneth Lee and Professor of Electrical Engineering Steven Northrup are running the program.

“It is a great opportunity for our students to gain cultural experience and earn credits. This program also keeps the bond between our universities, as we currently have academic agreements with Shandong University,” says Dr. Lee. “It opens research collaboration between our universities.”

Students will take trips to Beijing and Xian for out of classroom activities like visiting the Forbidden City, The Great Wall, the Terracotta Army, and more.

“China is so unique in its own culture, so I'm glad it's offered through our University as a study abroad option,” says freshman Civil Engineering major, Caroline Best. “I'm really excited to be able to see the Terra Cotta Warriors and the Great Wall, and to meet and interact with the students at Shandong University.”
