Mr. Hugh Dugan, founder and president of the Truce Foundation of the USA, recently spoke to Western New England University students and faculty about the significance of the Olympic Truce, and his many years as a diplomat at the United Nations. The Olympic Truce is a tradition dating to 776 B.C. marked by the cessation of hostilities between nations in the period leading up to, during, and following the Olympic Games.
As a career diplomat with the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Mr. Dugan was instrumental in seeking adoption of the Olympic Truce resolution before every Olympic Games exposition since 1993 in the United Nations General Assembly, which received universal support from the member states.
During past study broad trips to Olympic Games in Beijing, London, and Rio de Janeiro, Western New England University students have been fortunate to be involved in the work of the Truce Foundation by serving as student ambassadors and hosts at the Foundation’s gala awards ceremonies.
Mr. Dugan’s presentation, moderated by CISB director Curt Hamakawa and sponsored by the Western New England University Alumni Association, was the 27th event in the “For the Love of the Games” speaker series, which has brought influential and high-profile leaders in international business and sport to Western New England University.
Established in 2007, the CISB is a forum for the study of the business of sport with an international focus. In addition to the distinguished speaker program that brings prominent personalities from sport and business to the University community, the CISB organizes a summer Seminar Abroad Program that takes students to the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup.
