Western New England University held its Alternative Spring Break Reception on April 3, in the Senate Chambers of the St. Germain Campus Center. The students who participated in this year’s projects travelled to Des Moines, IA, to work with Habitat for Humanity. The reception gave the students an opportunity to share their personal experiences and enlighten other students and faculty about the many advantages of participating in the Alternative Spring Break volunteer programs.
“This gathering gives the students a chance to talk about the work they did, what they enjoyed and gained from the experience, and reflect on the memories they made,” explained Emily Seils, the assistant director for civic engagement at Western New England University. “It really helps build strong and lasting bonds between the students, and our hope is for students to continue volunteering their time in the Springfield community as well.”
Sophomore Jeffrey Scroggins shared, “It’s a chance for students to do something constructive over spring break, something that makes them feel good by helping someone in need. We worked very hard and had a lot of fun. I can’t think of a better spring break!”
The impact of the trip really came to life when students shared a photo slideshow of the trip. The students hoped by sharing their experiences, more students will volunteer next year.
