The Western New England University Army ROTC cadets recently hosted the annual Minuteman Battalion Awards Ceremony in the Lyman and Leslie Wood Auditorium. The Minuteman Battalion is comprised of cadets from ten colleges and universities in western Massachusetts, with Western New England University having one of the largest contingents.
With family members looking on, and several senior military officers in attendance, the following Western New England University cadets received awards. All awardees were selected by their military leadership advisors and Professors of Military Leadership based on academic and military proficiency along with the criteria established by the awarding organizations. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston Award was presented by Brigadier General Retired Emery Maddox to an outstanding neophyte Field Artilleryman. This year’s recipient is Cadet Brian M. Mascola, a graduating senior Criminal Justice major from Atkinson, NH.
The Distinguished Military Graduate Award distinguishes military students who possess outstanding qualities of leadership and high moral character. This year's award went to Cadet Joshua Griffith, graduating senior Criminal Justice Major from Middleton, MA. Cadet Griffith also received the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Award presented for exceptional scholastic achievement.
The Armed Forces Communications And Electronics Association Of Old Crows Award is presented to a student majoring in a scientific or technical field, who has demonstrated outstanding potential. This year’s recipient is Cadet David F. Rakvica, junior Civil Engineering major from Ballston Lake, NY, who was also awarded a $1000 scholarship.
The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States Medal was presented to the MSIII cadet who has shown the greatest improvement. This year’s recipient is Cadet Kyle M. Martins, a senior Management and Leadership major from Springfield, MA. Cadet Martins received a certificate and medal from the Loyal Legion, as well as a scholarship.
The Sons of the American Revolution National Society Award was presented to Cadet Domenic J. Liquori, a senior Criminal Justice major from Springfield, MA, for all-around excellence in the rigors of ROTC training.
The Department of the Army Superior Cadet Award is presented to outstanding cadets in the top 10% of their military leadership class. Recipients include MSII Cadet Joseph L. Neidert Jr., a senior Criminal Justice major from Rochester, NY, and MSI Cadet Henry R. Wix, a junior Mathematics major from Granby, CT. Cadet Henry R. Wix also received the Reserve Officers’ Association Award for outstanding qualities of leadership, moral character, and a high aptitude for military service.
