The Department of English at Western New England University is pleased to announce the results of the annual Dean's Prizes, as determined by a panel of department faculty.
“While covering a wide range of subjects and styles, the winning entries all match careful attention to detail and original insight.” said Associate Professor of English Edward Wesp. “The winning submissions distinguished themselves from a strong field of entries not only by the quality of the writing, but also because each offered a compelling vision. The essays, story and poem each leave their reader with a clearer view of the culture in which we live.”
The Dean's Prizes for Creative Writing honor the best Prose and Poetry pieces written for 200level and above courses in the area of creative writing.
The prize for prose was awarded to senior Gunther Cox, for his story “Husk.”
The winner of the prize for poetry was senior Lindsay Ferreira for the poem “992 lbs.”
The Dean's Prizes for Literary and Cultural Studies honor the best essays written for 200-level and above courses in the area of literary or cultural criticism.
First prize was awarded to junior Gina Lanzano for her essay “Examining Althusser, Nietzsche, and Marx: How Opposing Ideologies Alienate Esther in The Bell Jar.”
The second prize recipient was senior Ryan Shea for his essay “Dimmesdale in the Forest: A Glimpse of Freedom.”
Third prize went to Sophomore Caitlyn Marchand for her essay “Maintaining Individuality in Orange is the New Black.”
