The College of Pharmacy held its second annual Golden Bear Pharmacy Summer Camp this year. Thirty-four area high school students were able to attend the free camp, held in the Center for Sciences and Pharmacy on the campus of Western New England University. The camp introduces high school students to opportunities in a variety of science disciplines, and allows them to explore new laboratory technologies.
The camp included a full week of activities coordinated by College of Pharmacy Professor Arin Whitman and presented by more than 20 pharmacy faculty and staff. The workshops and other activities included DNA extraction and purification, fluid and gas separation using chromatography, making therapeutic creams with proper laboratory techniques, as well as participating in microbiology experiments and demonstrations of laboratory equipment. The students spent time with clinical faculty learning clinical skills such as taking blood pressure, and recognizing common uses for medicinal herbs. It was a well-rounded week full of activities and learning.
