Due to the expected winter storm, the University will close campus beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. The campus will remain closed through Monday, and we expect to resume normal operations on Tuesday morning. If conditions change, we will share updates promptly. 

Campus Services During the Closure 

While most in-person activities will pause, essential services will remain available. Public Safety and Facilities will be on campus throughout the storm, and the following services are expected to remain open or staffed: 

  • Residence Halls (RDs/RAs on duty) 
  • Dining 
  • Computer Labs 
  • Facilities/Housekeeping 
  • University Operator 
  • Health Services (TBD by Director) 

Students living on campus should expect regular support from Residence Life and Public Safety. 

Classes and Work During the Closure 

Students 
Scheduled face-to-face classes will not take place on campus. At the discretion of faculty, some in-person classes may be held remotely. Faculty will communicate directly, so please check your email and course site for updates. 

Classes that are already scheduled to be fully remote will continue as usual unless otherwise communicated by your instructor.  

Staff 
Staff who are able to work remotely should coordinate with their supervisors as appropriate.

The University’s Inclement Weather Policy is available on the WNE website via the homepage banner. We will communicate any changes or reopening details through WNE Alert, email, and the University website.

College of Engineering Names New Faculty Bringing Broad Research Interests to Classrooms and Labs

Dr. Katherine Schlef has joined the Western New England University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Dr. Jamileh Shojaeiarani has been named to the faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. 

Dr. Schlef joins the CEE faculty after finishing a postdoctoral position with The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) in collaboration with researchers at Columbia University and the University of Alabama. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a B.S. in General Engineering from Harvey Mudd College. Her research addresses questions such as: how might flooding change with a changing climate? Or, how should water resources be managed given changes in water demand and climate? To answer these questions, she uses national and even global data sets, and employs a variety of statistical and process-based modeling techniques.

Dr. Shojaeiarani most recently taught at North Dakota State University, Fargo, where she earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering-Nanocomposite Materials. She holds an M.S. in Mechanics of Machinery from Isfahan University of Technology and a B.S. in Mechanics of Machinery from Shiraz University, both of Iran. Her areas of research include reinforced bio-nanocomposites, cellulose nanocomposite hydrogels, polymer-based high performance nanocomposites, sustainable production of materials from renewable resources, water cleaning membranes, and conversion of biomass into bio-based industrial products.
