The Western New England University School of Law will host "Past, Present, and Moving Forward: 50th Anniversary of Title IX," a virtual symposium on Friday, October 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public at bit.ly/WNE-Law-Title-IX. Viewing of the symposium will be held at the Blake Law Center in Room B on the WNE University campus.

The Education Amendments of 1972 marked a historic victory for civil rights. Among the education amendments is Title IX which states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

This Title has created equal opportunities in educational programs and activities and prohibited discrimination regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.

This symposium aims to begin a larger conversation about Title IX including its successes, faults, and how it should advance. By bringing together experts of varying backgrounds and disciplines, this symposium intends to unpack Title IX and its 50-year history. The symposium will seek to analyze and discuss the impacts of Title IX on our everyday lives and how Title IX can grow and expand in the years ahead. The objective of this symposium is to build knowledge and create an informed, respectful, and vigorous discussion about the inclusions, exclusions, and headways of Title IX.

The event will open with a welcome and keynote address by Former Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court and Attorney, Joette Katz. Attorney Katz is currently a partner at Shipman & Goodwin in their Business Litigation Practice Group. Before joining Shipman & Goodwin, Attorney Katz was an Associate Justice on the Connecticut Supreme Court where she heard approximately 2,500 cases and authored nearly 500 opinions. Of those opinions, Attorney Katz is known for making a powerful impact on educational rights and LGBTQIA+ rights. Attorney Katz is a well-regarded and influential member of the legal field, lauded for her positive impact on the legal community. Her distinguished legal career and service provide her with considerable knowledge and experience.

Two panel discussions which will take a deeper look at the intricacies of Title IX will follow Attorney Katz’s address: “Title IX in the Making—Exemptions, Challenges, and Limitations” in the morning, followed by “Moving Forward after 50 years—Solutions for Expansion and Inclusion” in the afternoon.
