The Western New England University School of Law will host two Lunch and Learn presentations titled Title IX: Sex Discrimination in Education. The first will be held on Wednesday, February 22 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Blake Law Center, Room C. The second will be a Zoom session on Monday, February 27 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. EST. Both will be facilitated by Dean Erin Buzuvis and moderated by WNE Professor of Law Dr. Bridgette Baldwin.
Just over fifty years ago, Congress passed Title IX, the civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. Since that time, Title IX has drastically changed scholastic and collegiate athletics, the role of gender in admissions, the way schools treat pregnant and LGBTQ students, the process for handling sexual misconduct, and institutional infrastructure for protecting civil rights.
This lunch and learn will examine Title IX’s history, evaluate its successes and failures, and frame the controversies of the present moment. Participants will leave with the knowledge to confidently engage in Title IX-related discourse, advocacy, and political action.
