Western New England University (WNE) and Springfield Dementia Friendly Coalition are set to host the upcoming Brain Health Conference, scheduled for Friday, April 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Campus Center, Room A. The conference will delve into the complexities of dementia, offering attendees an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the condition and its management.

The guest speaker for the event is Dr. Deepu Alex Thomas, MD, Medical Director of the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) unit at Baystate Medical Center. Dr. Thomas, a distinguished geriatrician, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the conference. Graduating from Mahatma Gandhi University/Government Medical College Kottayam in Southern India in 2003, Dr. Thomas furthered his education with post-graduate studies in the UK completing his residency in internal medicine at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA, in 2010. Prior to his current role, he dedicated 12 years to primary care at Baystate Medical Practices in Greenfield, MA, and received a fellowship in geriatrics through the UMASS-Baystate program in 2023.

The Brain Health Conference aims to provide attendees with comprehensive information on dementia and related conditions. Highlights of the event include a virtual presentation by Dr. Deepu Thomas on enhancing brain health and an in-depth discussion on the benefits of addressing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). The conference will feature facilitated discussions, expert Q&A sessions, and informational tables and brochures designed to reduce stigma and educate the community about ADRD.

This event is made possible through collaboration with the Springfield Dementia Friendly Coalition, Western New England University Office of Cultural Education and Inclusion, and Western New England University School of Law Outreach & Diversity Committee.
