WNE Honors Distinguished Alumni for Leadership and Community Impact

Western New England University honored three graduates whose distinguished achievements and dedication to their alma mater embody the spirit of the Golden Bears during its annual Alumni Awards Dinner on Monday, June 9, 2025. 

Honorees and Awards 

  • Dr. Alissa Long ’17/PharmD ’19Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award 
    A recent graduate whose professional and civic contributions have rapidly been recognized, Dr. Long was celebrated as the Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year. This award was first presented in 2009. 
  • Brittany Decker ’11 – The inaugural Alumni Achievement Award recipient and a 
    graduate of the class of 2011, Decker received acclaim for her longstanding achievements in her professional career and steadfast community engagement. 
  • Jim Bedard ’83/G’87The Michael A. Serafino Alumnus of the Year Award—originally established in 1970 as the Alumnus of the Year Award—was renamed in 2021 in memory of Michael A. Serafino '77, a longtime University trustee and past recipient of the honor. This award is given to a member of the alumni community who has displayed an extraordinary commitment to professional achievement, to civic responsibility, to high personal standards, and to Western New England University – and doing so with a spirit of knowledge, integrity, and service. Bedard was selected for this distinction as someone who embodies Golden Bear pride through enduring leadership and deep commitment to the WNE community.


The alumni awards—presented annually by the Alumni Association—highlight graduates who demonstrate professional excellence, service to community, and a deep connection to the university. 

In an interview with Western Mass News, Decker, a former anchor at the station reflected on her relationships forged at WNE: “My professors truly took me under their wing and lead me on a journey to where I am today… I’m just so grateful that my beginning was here in western Mass, and here at Western New England University.”  

Celebrating Golden Bear Pride 

The ceremony featured award presentations that showcased not only individual excellence but also the communal spirit of Western New England University. The evening underscored the institution’s dedication to highlighting the accomplishments of its alumni through signature events like this one, continuing a proud tradition of honoring past graduates. 

As the evening concluded, attendees reflected on the remarkable journeys of Dr. Long, Decker, and Bedard—each a vibrant representation of WNE’s commitment to fostering leadership and community impact. Their recognition at the June 9 ceremony further solidifies their status as distinguished alumni and inspiring role models for the university’s current students and fellow graduates.
