Western New England University first-year student Ben Bedford recently performed at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall after winning the 2025 Crescendo International Music Competition. The event marked the third time Bedford has performed at Carnegie Hall, having previously earned the honor just before the pandemic. His impressive performance this year not only secured him a near-perfect score but also qualified him for an international music program through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).

As part of this program, Bedford will have the opportunity to travel and perform in cities across Japan, Finland, and Germany during the summer months. In addition to participating in several international performances as a pianist, he will engage in master classes, explore global music traditions, and experience the culture and heritage of each location.

“I’m incredibly excited for the chance to collaborate with international musicians and immerse myself in new cultures,” Bedford said. “Performing at Carnegie Hall was already a dream come true, but this next chapter will allow me to grow as both a musician and a person.”

Bedford’s musical journey began at the age of seven. A talented pianist, he has competed in numerous competitions throughout his youth and recently started teaching piano to others. While music is a significant part of his life, Bedford is also focused on his academic pursuits. Initially enrolled in the cybersecurity program at WNE, he is currently in the process of transferring into the pharmacy program.

“I’m so grateful for the support of my family, friends, and my mentor, Ellen Buoniconti,” he said. “Additionally, the musical accommodations I have been provided here at Western New England have made broadening my skillset considerably easier, and the peers I have met along the way have supported me greatly.”

Music has always been Ben’s passion, and he can’t wait to experience where this journey takes him. The next stops for Ben? He will be performing in Japan in June and July and in Finland and Germany in August.
