Western New England University Professor of Psychology Dr. Jessica Carlson has been recognized for more than a decade of service as faculty advisor to the University’s chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. Since assuming the role on September 1, 2011, Dr. Carlson has guided and mentored students in one of the world’s largest and most active honor societies.
At Western New England University, Dr. Carlson has played an essential role in cultivating an active and engaged Psi Chi community. In the 2024–25 academic year, the WNE chapter inducted 17 new members—four more than the previous year. Demonstrating her commitment to creating meaningful experiences for students, Dr. Carlson also invited an alumnus to serve as a colloquium speaker during the annual induction ceremony, giving current members an opportunity to hear first-hand how their education and Psi Chi involvement can shape future career paths.
“Serving as faculty advisor to Psi Chi has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career,” said Dr. Carlson. “I am continually inspired by our students’ curiosity, passion for psychology, and desire to make a positive difference. Psi Chi not only recognizes their academic accomplishments but also provides them with opportunities to grow as leaders, scholars, and members of a professional community.”
Founded in 1929, Psi Chi is dedicated to recognizing and promoting excellence in the science and application of psychology. Membership in Psi Chi provides students with unique opportunities to advance their studies, connect with peers and professionals, and contribute to the field through research and leadership. Members have access to over $400,000 annually in grants, awards, and scholarships, as well as the opportunity to publish in the Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research. Today, more than 1,160 faculty members worldwide serve as chapter advisors, helping sustain the organization’s mission.
“Chapter advisors are the backbone of Psi Chi,” said the organization in its recognition of Dr. Carlson. “They identify and induct qualified students, mentor chapter leaders, and ensure students have access to the resources Psi Chi offers. The Society simply could not exist without their dedication.”
Through Dr. Carlson’s leadership, WNE’s Psi Chi chapter continues to enrich the academic and professional journeys of psychology students, fostering excellence, connection, and lifelong impact.
