Industrial Engineering
As an industrial engineer, you will have the broadest variety of opportunities, as this profession found in virtually every type of industry. You will find industrial engineers in distribution companies, financial markets, manufacturing firms, healthcare, and technology, to name a few. You will learn all the tools you need for problem solving and decision-making in complex real world systems. The curriculum incorporates a blend of theory, laboratory, and industry-based project work that will prepare you to enter the profession and/or graduate study.
Why Choose Industrial and Engineering Management?
Industrial engineers take a system’s view of things and strive to improve products and processes. You may work in a hospital, trying to design new emergency room procedures to improve wait times and decrease costs, or in an automobile manufacturing plant trying to redesign a production line for better worker ergonomics and improved quality. Maybe you would like to work in a distribution center, analyzing and improving the operations for better customer satisfaction, or as an operations analyst conducting system monitoring, or even designing the layout of a theme park for the best guest flow and minimal wait times. The most distinctive aspect of industrial engineering is the career flexibility it offers.
What Will You Study?
Your faculty will inspire and challenge you through a flexible curriculum that allows you to take courses in production management, quality, statistics, analytics, supply chains, operations research, finance, and more. You will graduate as a well-rounded industrial engineer with an entrepreneurial perspective of business operations as they pertain to engineering.
We also offer programs to accelerate your studies to achieve your personal goals.

Career Opportunities
Industrial engineering offers a versatile career in virtually any industry. Our graduates have been hired at Disney World®, General Dynamics, Hazen Paper, Johnson & Johnson, LEGO Systems, Lowes Distribution Center, Northeast Utilities, Pratt & Whitney, Smith & Wesson, Stanley Black & Decker, Synergy Investments, and UTC Aerospace Systems. Other students head directly to graduate school, including Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Purdue University, Quinnipiac University, University of Alabama, and Western New England University.
Internship and Study Abroad Opportunities
Internships
Students are encouraged to take on internships to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world industry. Recent internship sites include Bozzuto’s Inc., Disney World®, General Dynamics, ISO New England, Sikorsky, and UTC Aerospace Systems.
Engineering Abroad
The College of Engineering has a global vision for engineering education. As such, students have a variety of opportunities to study abroad with the University.
Research Opportunities
Our students participate in research projects with faculty and collaborate on projects within their majors and beyond. They also have opportunities to travel regionally and nationally to present their design projects and research papers at professional conferences.
Recent examples of research include:
- Work with the Center for Advanced Training Research and Naturalistic Studies (ATRANS). Their research involves the development and testing of advanced hazard perception training for teens using an iPad-based driving simulator
- Work with the Center for Global Health Engineering to create sustainable healthcare solutions for developing countries
- Work with professors to test and analyze different lithium ion batteries in order to determine how their capacity for energy changes over time
Student Competitions
There are several student competitions each year that allow you to present your hard work and compete with students from other schools. Entries include design projects, academic papers, and research conducted with faculty members. Students also enter their entrepreneurial inventions in the Entrepreneurial Spirit Awards to vie for prize money to fund their own business or product or incubate their newest ideas through the Western Mass Innovation Jam.
Our students have also competed in and won awards in regional, national, and international design competitions, such as the Institute of Industrial Engineers International Student Simulation Competition.
Labs and Facilities
The Industrial Engineering Laboratory is equipped with over $8 million worth of commercial edition software. This includes the Dessault Systems PLM product that was used to design and evaluate the Boeing 787. Other software packages include Flexsim, MINITAB, CPLEX, LINDO, ARENA, SAP, CATIA, and eVSM.
Clubs & Organizations
Industrial Engineering students may have interests in: Institute of Industrial Engineers, American Society of Engineering Management, National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, or the FIRST® Robotics Club. Many of our students also participate in varsity and intramural sports, special interest groups, and student government.

Unique Learning Opportunities
-
First Year Program
"Design, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking from day one" is the cornerstone of engineering education at Western New England University. Our first-year engineering program teams students up to design, code, and prototype a robot to compete in the Bot Battle at the end of the first semester. In the second semester, data acquisition and processing, ethical standards, communication, and business skills are developed. Student teams design a product to improve lives through the application of smart technology. The prototypes are presented at the Emerging Engineers Expo at the end of the year.
-
Senior Design Projects
Take what you've learned in the classroom and apply it to solve a real industry problem in a Senior Design Project that caps off your engineering education. You'll research, design, and develop a project that advances industry knowledge. Regional companies may sponsor and guide you through the completion of your project, which will allow you to leverage the opportunity into a full-time job. Recent examples of Senior Design Projects are creating a data-driven inventory analysis, an LED-based spectrophotometer for testing medication quality, and testing reliability and life-span of lithium ion batteries.
