The Art Gallery at will host painter Andrae Green’s exhibit “Parallax” from April 15 to May 19. The gallery, located in the St. Germain Campus Center, will host a gallery talk on Thursday, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. where the artist will offer insight into his work, followed by a reception from 5:00-6:30 p.m. All gallery events are free and open to the public.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Green was awarded a grant to obtain his MFA in Painting at the New York Academy of Art and later completed a residency at the Contemporary Artists Center in Troy, NY. Green’s paintings have been shown internationally in the US, Jamaica, Canada, China, and France. In 2012 he was one of two artists chosen to represent Jamaica in the Beijing Biennale. In 2013, Green was selected as a part of the American delegation that represented the US at the Salon de Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France. He currently lives and works in Springfield.

Green’s fascination with history as well as the construction and representation of reality inspires his artwork. The artist is interested in how the legacies left by colonialism and slavery impact the representations of people of color today. “My work uses painting as an exploration to delve into the internalized senses that are not quantifiable which we use to perceive the world, such as intuition, clairvoyance, and other feelings that lie outside of the physical realm,” he explains. “History and fantasy, also, can be interchangeable and used to reinvent our identities.”
