Western New England University's Doctor of Pharmacy Class of 2020 achieved an 82.4% Phase I match rate among candidates for postgraduate pharmacy residency programs, the highest match rate in the New England region and second nationally only to the University of California – San Francisco.
Operated by National Matching Services Inc., final year pharmacy students apply for competitive 1-year or 2-year postgraduate pharmacy practice residency opportunities in a variety of hospital, community, managed care, and specialty practice settings nationwide. The matching process provides an orderly means to help applicants obtain positions in residency programs of their choice, while helping programs obtain applicants of their choice. Similar matching programs are utilized by other health professions, including medicine, dentistry, and podiatry.
"This outcome provides further evidence that the College is preparing its graduates for advanced pharmacy practice opportunities," said Dr. James Knittel, Professor and Interim Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. "Our alumni will head out across the region and the country and demonstrate the value of a Western New England University education."
Students demonstrating interest in pursuing postgraduate pharmacy residency programs work with the College's Residency Advisory Committee, a multidisciplinary group of faculty who coordinate programming and workshops throughout the doctor of pharmacy program to build the skill sets of future applicants.
