The Western New England University School of Law Institute for Legislative and Governmental Affairs will host the 25th Annual United States Supreme Court Review Conference on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, and it will take place virtually.
The Supreme Court Review Conference will feature School of Law faculty examining important Supreme Court decisions issued during the 2019-2020 Term as well as focusing on the pivotal role played by Chief Justice Roberts. Speakers will include Professor Bridgette Baldwin, Professor Erin Buzuvis, Professor Emeritus Leora Harpaz, Professor Jennifer Levi, and Professor Emeritus Bruce Miller.
Professor Miller will begin the discussion by speaking about the two Trump subpoena cases seeking access to President Trump’s financial records and tax returns. Professor Baldwin will next focus on Ramos v. Louisiana interpreting the Sixth Amendment to require a unanimous jury verdict. Professor Levi will discuss the decision interpreting Title VII to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity as well as the Court’s decision finding a Louisiana abortion law to be unconstitutional. Professor Buzuvis will talk about two important administrative law decisions, the Court’s decision preventing, at least for the time being, the Trump administration from rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as well as an important separation of powers case striking down limits on the President’s ability to remove the head of an administrative agency. Finally, Professor Harpaz will discuss the three religious liberty cases decided this Term which show the Court moving toward a more aggressive protection of religious liberty over secular interests.
A panel discussion to assess the Term as a whole will follow the individual presentations. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions both after each individual presentation and during the panel discussion.
The Institute for Legislative and Governmental Affairs at the Western New England University School of Law was established in 2000 to offer students the opportunity to participate in activities relating to the legislative process.
