Participants to the first in a series of FinTech Incubator events gather in the WNE College of Business.

On Thursday night, April 11, the FinTech Incubator at Western New England University (WNE) College of Business hosted its inaugural Idea Jam, marking the beginning of the highly anticipated FinTech + AI 413 Startup Launch Series. Designed to foster the growth of local entrepreneurs in the FinTech or AI sector, the event drew a diverse group of 11 participants from area institutions including Springfield College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, The Hartford, and Western New England University.

Participants were presented with the opportunity to either bring their own startup ideas or select from a list of suggestions provided by event organizers. The evening began with an insightful overview of FinTech, accompanied by discussions on the business models of leading startups within the industry, led by Ethan Jiang, assistant professor of Finance at WNE. This was followed by a networking session with experienced mentors, followed by breakout sessions where they honed their ideas under the guidance of mentors.

Reflecting on the event's success, Yamini Jha, professional educator of Business Analytics at WNE and the event organizer, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "Seeing this was the first time we've organized this event were delighted so see this level of participation and engagement by the aspiring entrepreneurs from area colleges and businesses. We look forward to their continued participation in upcoming events in this series."

Charles Mutigwe, Associate Professor of Business Analytics and leader of the WNE FinTech Incubator, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of contributing to the Commonwealth's burgeoning FinTech ecosystem. "It was great to see the energy in the room. We are pleased to contribute to the Commonwealth's FinTech ecosystem by providing a platform where local entrepreneurs can get resources to help them build the next tech businesses here in Western Mass," remarked Mutigwe.

The series continues next Thursday, April 18 with a Pitch Camp, where mentors will help the participants to prepare and practice an elevator pitch of their startup idea. Registration for this event is still open to any student or resident of Massachusetts.
