In a historic moment for Western New England University, President Robert Johnson warmly welcomed the Class of 2028, the largest cohort in the University's rich history. More than 950 students join the Golden Bear community on Monday, August 26, marking the start of a transformative journey filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and connection.
During the welcome ceremony, President Johnson shared words of inspiration with the first-year students and their families, encouraging them to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
"You belong here—because you are prepared to learn, unlearn, and relearn," President Johnson stated. "Growth requires more than just natural ability; it demands dedication, resilience, and a willingness to embrace challenges. The journey ahead won’t always be easy, but it is through struggle that you will build the intellectual muscle necessary for success."
He emphasized the importance of adopting a growth mindset, urging students to see challenges as opportunities to learn and stretch their abilities.
"Learning is not about how naturally gifted you are, but about how you respond when things don’t come easily," he continued. "Your mindset, not just your ability, will ultimately determine your success. Here at Western New England University, we are committed to helping you develop this mindset for life."
A Geographically Diverse and Career-minded Class
The Class of 2028 reflects a broad spectrum of backgrounds, experiences, and interests, coming from 25 states and 24 countries, including far-reaching places like California, Puerto Rico, and Nepal. This geographic diversity reflects a microcosm of the world, enriching the WNE community, fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment where different perspectives thrive.
Among the new students, popular fields of study include Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Business Analytics and Information Management, Criminal Justice, and Accounting. These programs will be the foundation upon which students build their academic and professional futures.
Building a Supportive Community
Move-in day was filled with excitement as students settled into their new residences, met their roommates, and began forming connections that will shape their University experience. The sense of community was palpable, with returning students and staff on hand to ensure a smooth transition.
"Embarking on your college journey is a significant milestone, one that can feel both exhilarating and daunting," remarked Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students, Jessica Hill. "At WNE, our commitment extends beyond the classroom; we are a deeply connected community where each member is valued and supported. We encourage our students to seize every opportunity, engage fully in campus life, and know that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness. Our entire community is dedicated to ensuring their success and well-being."
An Agile Mind Education
Western New England University embraces an educational approach designed for a rapidly changing world—Agile Mind Education. This approach equips students with the ability to connect ideas across disciplines, engage in intellectual risk-taking, and continually adapt to new challenges. By fostering a culture of exploration and interdisciplinary learning, WNE prepares students not just to succeed in their chosen fields, but to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.
"We’re here to help you develop a mindset for life," President Johnson emphasized. "Our goal is to teach you to accept criticism constructively, to be goal-oriented, and to persist in the face of challenges. We are excited to see where your journey will take you, and we are here to support you every step of the way."
As the Class of 2028 embarks on their college journey, they do so with the knowledge that they have joined a community committed to their growth, success, and well-being. Welcome to the Golden Bear family!
