Sport is big business—a $435 billion-a-year industry that needs highly trained professionals with knowledge of all aspects of business operations. That is why you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree as you major in Sport Management. In this versatile program, you will learn the ins and outs of this exciting field and explore career paths through internships, research opportunities, and field experiences. With analytics playing an increasingly important role in sport analysis, you can earn certification in SAP as you earn your BSBA. You may also elect to pursue an accelerated combined bachelor/law degree through our 3+3 Law program or Five-year Bachelor/Master of Science in Sport Leadership and Coaching program. The Sport Management major is accredited by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). It is one of only two sport management programs in the U.S. accredited by both COSMA and AACSB International. Since its establishment in 1996, Sport Management has become the largest program in the College of Business.

What to Expect

Sport Management is a business-oriented major focused on how to properly lead an organization in the sports industry. Some entry-level and career options for a Sport Management major to consider include game day/event coordinator, facility operations manager, sports marketer, or athletic director.

What Will You Study?

To prepare you for management careers, you will take a common core of business courses. Your sport management-specific courses may include such courses as Sport Facility Planning and Management, Sport Marketing, International Sport Management, or Business Law for Sport Management, combined with field trips to sport venues. With the use of elective courses, Sport Management majors can pursue a dual major in Marketing. Courses can help you explore the worlds of sports analytics, scouting and player development, event management or golf operations, intercollegiate athletics management, or you can minor in athletic coaching. Our 3+3 Law program can prepare you to work in arbitration or negotiation while the Five-year Bachelor/Master of Science in Sport Leadership offers two cohort tracks: Athletic Administration or Athletic Coaching.

Internships and Field Work

This major has a significant focus on experiential opportunities and students often have several internships in the field. They may complete a three-credit collegiate athletics course, which provides the opportunity to plan, organize, and lead various elements of sport-related programming which may include intercollegiate athletic teams, intramurals, recreation, and health and wellness. In the six-credit Advanced Field Experience, qualified students spend a semester-long, full-time intern positions within a sport organization. Recent sites include the Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia 76ers, Kansas City Chiefs, Harvard Athletics, American Junior Golf Association, ESPN, Commonwealth Coast Conference, New England Football Club, Springfield Thunderbirds, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

SAP is used in the sport industry by such organizations as SunPower for Talent Management, the San Francisco 49ers to enhance fan experience, and Proctor & Gamble for Real-Time Analytics.
